Final project

“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

Plato

Next semester I will be collaborating with the PYP team for the exhibition. The school is making changes to the conceptualization of the Primary Division. In the beginning, as a Singapore curriculum school, Primary division was divided into Lower Primary (KG1-3) and Upper Primary (4-6). Next year, it will be Primary Division from Grade 1 to 5. So, exceptionally, this year grade 5 and 6 will have an exhibition.

My cooperation with the exhibition is usually focused on ‘Academic Integrity’, sources of information and citation.  As I mentioned before, I always was involved in technology. In fact, before becoming an IB librarian, I was a ‘Circulation System Librarian’ at my university. I was part of the Automation unit of the library, and we were involved in one of the pioneering projects of university libraries automation projects in Latin America.

Last academic year,  I introduced students to the concept of ‘Digital citizenship’ through Common Sense Education during my library sessions (45 minutes per cycle) so they could be better packed for the exhibition. I didn’t realize how involved in Social Media are children between 10-11 years-old. Most of them without any parental guidance or consent. However, listening to other students sharing about their experiences and learning about their digital footprints, made them reflect on their behavior online. We started to create awareness about Social Media. Another topic that we shared with the PYPx students was about pictures and photos copyrights. Unfortunately, grade 5 or 6 is a bit late to teach them because the habit of copying and pasting has been created. But, I believed that never is too late so I showed them unsplash and pixabay because it’s about being respectful and principled with their and other’s work.

My journey on COETAIL has driven me to unexplored areas of pedagogy and technology. My approach to librarianship, my awareness about good practices and deep learning arises through all my old practices.

Choosing my project:

In the beginning, I was thinking about improving my course 1 project about “Exploration” and the UOI: Where we are in place and time. While sharing my ideas with the PYP Coordinator, he encourages me to do it with the PYPx. I think it’s a big challenge because our school in spite of having all the tools, isn’t integrating much technology in the class. It’s a big challenge because I should work with teachers as well as students and introduce them to new practices.

ISTE standards:

When I have chosen the ISTE standards for students and framed them with the AASL National School Library Standards crosswalk with ISTE standards

  • ISTE 3.a  Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions
  • ISTE 4a Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
  • ISTE 7d Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions.
  • AASL VI.D.2 Reflecting on the process of ethical generation of knowledge
  • ASSL V.A.3 Engaging in inquiry-based processes for personal growth.

The PYPx is a huge project so I wanted to narrow my collaboration to the following areas:

  • Use collaborative technologies ethically to show understanding
  • Collaborate online to construct knowledge
  • Create visuals to communicate ideas more effectively
  • Conduct a collaborative multidisciplinary inquiry-based research project

How can I connect my journey with COETAIL with this project?

I will go through many of the topics that we have done. From PLN to PBL and Design Thinking. In my opinion, the most important take away will be if teachers’ realized that technology should be the vehicle for deep learning and not the end

Through deep learning, our students will be able to express their voice and choice. They will show curiosity, creativity to solve real-life issues or identify an opportunity for personal growth. Their thinking, research, communication, self-management, and social skills will be applied as they will go through the inquiry cycle working on their own and in groups.

How my journey with COETAIL changed my pedagogy? This unit will summarize most of my learning journey with COETAIL. I’m applying Ubd, GRASP, Bloom’s taxonomy, Design principles, and CARP. Also, I will be applying Project-based learning and Design thinking. Besides, I will be connecting with other educators through Skype in the classroom.

This year has been a transition period for my career. I have learned the required pedagogy to became a teacher-librarian and I’ve got the vision of the reloaded role of the librarian in the international scenario: a changemaker, a technology integrator, and an innovator.

The planner
The planner is here. It requires a lot of brainstorming and collaboration with the staff involved. It’s still work in progress as we are still trying to figure out those collaborative moments to improve it. Meanwhile, I will keep on developing in detail my sessions.

I’m sure this journey will be amazing!

Season’s greetings!
